Music for non-specialists

Further information

The session will target non-specialist teachers who need to have simple, straightforward and accessible musical material to use with children and to build their own confidence in music.

Participants will work together to gain skill and confidence in rhythmic and melodic work. Core curriculum of the introductory session (and of the subsequent year-long course) will be as laid down in the National Curriculum for music: ensemble performance skills – listening and appraising playing in time, rhythmic independence; and composition – melodic pattern making, developing ideas, creating longer musical structures. Core materials will be original music composed by Groove On, tried and tested and enthusiastically endorsed by teachers and children over many years. The session will also introduce the necessary skills and vocabulary to describe musical ideas and evaluate children’s progress in accordance with principles set down in the National Curriculum.
